Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre

Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre was born to explore and celebrate the American identity through original dance and music. Led by Honduras native Wilfredo Rivera, they are fearless storytellers helping people understand and engage with themselves and the world around them. Each piece they make centers a specific experience, and the company employs research and radical collaboration to convey that narrative through a diverse group of artists. Cerqua Rivera engages thousands of people each year through local and national touring, workshops, interactive previews of work in progress, and full concerts.

1) Luz & Sombras (Light & Shadows)

Through original dance and music exploring ancestry, legacy, and making a home, you are invited on a journey into America’s Latin diaspora. Traditional melodies and movement combine with contemporary music and gestures in an inviting celebration of the complexities and beauty of being American.

Cerqua Rivera proves we can celebrate our differences and our common humanity side by side. In a performance ranging from quiet and contemplative to athletic and powerful, this unique company invites you to experience different perspectives on individual and community, alone and together.

3) The Heart of the Story

All versions include description on-stage by a company member and company-led activities for a range of abilities. Study guides available.
- EmpoweHER - Work by women artists of color, showcasing the power and relevance of women’s voices
- Rooted in Rhythm - Work by Black artists, highlighting Black excellence and unity across color lines
- Sin Fronteras (Without Borders) - Work by Latinx/e artists, welcoming everyone into the Latin diaspora

There are as many ways to experience art as there are people. Beyond the stage, we work with communities to expand the impact of our visit, building audiences and meeting people where they are. Options include
- Master Classes: Our award-winning Artistic Director can lead classes in Latin Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary, Modern, Latin & Social Dance; from Beginner to Advanced.
- Dance Workshops and Residencies: Members of our company can work for a few hours or a few days, training dance students in work from our diverse and innovative repertoire.
- CommUnity Workshops: For the general public (5 yrs – Seniors, all ability levels), members of our company can lead sessions focused on the joy of movement and how identity and heritage live in the body.

Moderated by a member of our company or one of your staff, we offer audiences an opportunity to reflect on the work they’ve just seen in conversation with our artists –learning about the choreographic journey and thematic threads and exploring the collaborative relationships among artists that built the work, from choreographers and composers to dancers and musicians, lighting and costume designers.
Facilitated as an open dialogue, a Post-Show Talk-Back encourages audience questions and dialogue to increase their satisfaction with the experience and fosters meaningful connections by deepening audience members’ understanding of the work and one another.
