Jeanette Watts

Jeanette Watts has a unique relationship to dancing.

She has logged thousands of hours on stages, started performance companies from scratch, choreographed for teenagers, Pride events, senior citizens, and children. She knows dances from the Renaissance to the 1960s. She has her own maypole, and her costume collection fills her basement. She owns more dance shoes than regular shoes.

But her favorite statement regarding dance: "I want to dance WITH you, not AT you." Lately she has been specializing in teaching mostly historical dancing at museums, music festivals, historical societies, and America 250 events. Her programs are designed to match the experience level of attendees, who usually have never tried dancing like it's 1776 - or 1825 - or 1942.

Her other favorite statement: "You tell me what year it is, I'll tell you what dance we're doing."
